For some reason, this lens gets a bad rap but, I have found my copy to be fine. Is it a Zeiss? No. Is it that different from a Zeiss? No. Is it cheaper than a Zeiss or Sony G? For sure! I got mine on sale for $200.

I've been shooting with my copy for a few months and, am happy as a clam that it cost so little but delivers high quality images.

A good solid performer. If you get it on sale, I would call it an excellent lens.

One final thought on the zoom ring: It is tighter on this lens compared to other Sony, Minolta, and Konica Minolta lenses I own. But I like this as the lens has no lens creep at all. But if you are use to a looser zoom ring, it may seem too tight.

I purchased the Sony SAL 24-105 zoom for my Alpha 850. The images I get with the lens are satisfactory, and it is nice and light. On the downside, sometimes the lens "snags" when zooming in, which leads me to think that eventually there will be a mechanical failure. I do not think this lens will hold up to the rigours of daily hard use, and does not feel solid like my 70-300G series lens does, in my mind it is a casual users lens. I will be buying the Zeiss 24-70 asap, and putting this lens up for sale on eBay.

I stumbled across this lens (that I already own) while searching through the Clearance-Priced photo items at Amazon.com. The one-star rating somebody gave it bothered me.



A one-star review of this item for the reasons given is unfair. The ratings should be for the product quality and value, not for mistakes in the web page.



This is a fine lens and an EXCELLENT deal at the current clearance price.



No, it does not fit a 37mm lens diameter or provide a 0.6X wide-angle view as mentioned in the Features. As the Manufacturer's Product Description on the same page says: it fits a 52mm lens diameter and enlarges up to 2X the normal image, providing telephoto capability.



And mine does a nice job of that, hence the five-star rating.



It's not even fair to zing Amazon on this. Sure it was their mistake on the web page that annoyed the "One-star" buyer, but hey, anybody can make a mistake. For the thousands and thousands of products these guys sell, you've got to expect a couple web page errors. Nobody is perfect.



And my experience in dealing with Amazon.com tells me that there was absolutely no hassle and no cost in returning the item to Amazon. Their return policies and customer service are excellent. Therefore, they too deserve five stars, even with the mistake in their web page.



In summary, if you need a teleconverter adapter for your Sony DSC style camera that takes 52mm diameter attachments, this is the one to get. Better hurry, though - if it is "clearance" priced, it won't be around forever.

I used this teleconverter on Sony's dsc-70 digital still camera and I am still using it on the dsc-75 and with success. It lengthens 105 mm zoom to 210 mm! AF and shutter/diafragma program functions stay perfect - I do not understand why Sony does not recommend it for still cameras; the only limitation is that you cannot zoom fully out (to maximum whith) because then vignetting occurs. But that can be seen on the camera's back screen so that you exactly know the limits, too.

Image quality is excellent with no discernible drop from that of native lens. Build quality is good. Enables ultra wide shots suitable for real estate and architectural work (equivalent to 19mm in 35mm film). Needs a VAD-RA adapter - is still available - I sourced mine from the UK.

Is much better than generic adapters as is designed for the optics of the native lens. Strongly recommended but is heavy. I recommend using a monopod with it.

I recently purchased the Wide Angle converter lens for my Sony Cybershot DSC W150. To attach it to the camera, you first need to get the Sony VAD-WE Adaptor Ring for Sony VCL-D0746 & VCL-D2046 Conversion Lenses. The lens screws onto the ring adaptor nice and securely. The lens is very wide looking in comparison to the camera model, but not very long like the D2046 telephoto converter lens.



The lens is a 0.75x Optical zoom, which moves the image back slightly and captures more of the shot you're actually looking at.



Like most attachable lenses for cameras, you can't use the built-in flash or the optical viewfinder when the lens is attached. The ring adaptor and the lens converter block out these features.



Overall, I'm happy with this lens. It widens the camera shot nicely and to a noticeable degree, especially for use with a camera like the Sony Cybershot. I am glad to have purchased this lens.

 "Costly but Functional" 2003-12-25

When faced with buying a telephoto lens of this price, one natually looks to cut corners.

I can tell you from experience, don't. The cut-rate brands sold on Ebay (Phoenix, Opteka etc..)and elsewhere are simply junk. It's not that the photos taken with the the off-brands lenes are just bad and corectable via Photoshop, it's that they SO bad, that the autofocus on my Sony 717 simply can't self-correct enough to make the lenes even usable.

The VCL-HGD1758 works perfectly with very little/no loss of quality. I ended up buying one after trial and error. Learn from my mistake!

Your other options for a fine lens at about half the price are are the Olympus TCON-14B, Olympus TCON-17, Olympus B-300 and the Olympus A-200. They all work equally well on the Sony 707,717 or 828 but any of these non-Sony lens will require an adapter or step-ring to compensate for their non-58mm threads.

This is a great, albiet costly product. I sometimes question my own wisdom in buying a lens that is about 1/3 the price of the camera for only a 1.7X improvement in zoom (from 5 to 8.5 zoom) but I can't fault the quality.

Having owned a Sony DSC-f707 for a year now, I was looking to increase the optical zoom capability. This new lens fullfilled my objective. On the plus side, the images are clear with no detectable distortion. On the minus side, this lens is BIG. Not only does it take up alot of room, it's weight is significant. I found myself having to be very aware of my hand hold to prevent motion artifact.

Unlike the wide-angle lens, the usefulness of the tele converter lens is limited. For example, unless the camera is at max focal length, the lens cuts into the viewing area and subsequently ruins the picture. This is really only good for fixed zoom situations.

Okay you bought a DSC-V3 or have a V1 which translates into ownership of a great camera to begin with, so why is it we are always trying to fix things that aren't broken!? Hey- I'm guilty here too, so let me tell you what to expect from this lense. First off the V3 is a pretty potent camera at just a 4x optical zoom, so the thought of upping that to 5x plus was very attractive indeed, and yes the lense does extend the optical zoom to 5x but... (and its a big one)you must remember the V3 is a "fixed lense" camera wich means that by nature anything that you stick on the front of it weather made by Sony, Konica, or general foods will be alien to the operation and systems of the camera. NO EXCEPTIONS! So the result is that all your zoom capability from 1x upto 3 or 3.5x will be useless because your shot will be framed in a circle! A nice vignette effect to be sure but not what you'd want in your normal range shots trust me.That said, the lense does indeed give you that extra push, just be aware that you will lose all your closer ranges.I only gave the lense 3 stars for the following reasons, 1. The conversion lense system does not intergrate with the V3 lense hood, in other words to use this or the wide angle lense along with the hood your gonna be changing alot of stuff around, this is a pain in the butt to be sure, the lense hood adapter came with threads on the inside so I was under the impression that the lenses could be affixed to it. Not the case. 2. Not a Ziess lense. while the quality seems very good and the construction is excellent you should be aware that it is nowhere near the quality of the lense on the camera. That is surprising considering Sony's asking price of $145.99, I wouldn't have even bothered with this lense if not for Amazons price. 3. vignette hell!! Be aware that you will lose all picture range from about 1x to 3.5x, this lense is meant for distant objects ONLY! Oh and if you thought about maybe using the lense with the macro setting? Forget it. won't work. this lense ain't got a thing to do with flexability!! If all these things are workable with you (as they are for me, I've been using Sony products professionally and personally for 5 years) then this is a great extra for the V3.But then again I'm willing to take the time to change around lenses etc. to get the shots I want, and you might not be. The lense does what it was meant to do, by getting you 1.7x closer than you could get before. but thats all and I do mean thats ALL!I also bought the wide angle lense for the V3 so check for my review on that as well.I hope this helps, thanks for your time!

 "The best lens in the Alpha line, and maybe the best in the world!" 2009-04-07

Here is my preliminary review of this lens, as I also published on Dyxum website (with small modifications):



The pros are clear - very sharp (even wide open), fast AF, great colors and Bokeh (Minolta style), accessories (drop in CP filter). Definitely the best Sony lens - a combination of CZ-type sharpness with Minolta-type colors/Bokeh/feeling. I use it mainly with 1.4xTC and it works as good as without it.



The main con was also clear as soon as I got the lens - it is heavy! I used Minolta 400/4.5 and Minolta 300/2.8 HS (which is supposed to be as heavy as the Sony), but the Sony is much heavier. Even without the tripod collar. I don't have problem with holding the Minoltas, but with the Sony my hands are shaking. Actually I used it today for ~1.5 hours, and now, 3 hours after I am back, my left hand is still shaking. And I don't think I have Parkinson. Not yet...



The other cons are related to the structure of the lens. First time I used it, I took out the tripod collar. But I realized that I am pressing many buttons accidentally. When I tried to used it with the tripod collar (thinking that I can hold it from the collar), it was very uncomfortable and I couldn't have a good hold.

Another problem is the focus ring. It is big and nice to use when you want to use it, but it cannot be covered (like in Minolta lenses) and you can easily move it when you don't want to move it...

I used the lens a little more and I think I finally learned how to hold it. Now I can hold it without shaking. I just ignore my fear to press/move buttons/switches/focus ring and hold it in the most comfortable way for me (the back of the hand on the control panel with all the buttons and the fingers on the focus ring). I just need to remember to check from time to time that I press anything...

I also don't like the front "cap", which is actually more like a leather carrying case.

And the last complain - there is no dedicated protective filter for the front element (like in Minolta lenses). I heard that the front element is the protective glass, but even if it is true, I cannot replace it by myself. So if I have a scratch on the front element I need to send the lens for service.



Overall, it is a great lens! The image quality is amazing and makes all the cons irrelevant - if you want the best picture, this is the price you have to pay! I believe that most of my complains are because I am not used to the lens yet. I believe that after using it for a while, I will learn how to hold it in a way that my hands wil not shake and my fingers will not press the buttons. At least I want to believe it...

I'm not sure of the exact definition of "wide" but what I experience when using this fairly bulky (in comparison to the thickness of my Sony T-300) conversion lens isn't what I had in mind. Sony does say in the product description 'Wide end conversion x0.77" and if I knew more about camera and/or lenses perhaps that would have told me that what I'd be getting with this lens isn't all that impressive. The difference is so slight in fact, that I haven't bothered to take the lens with me when I've go on trips or even walks in town.
